Alberta’s iGaming Scene Taking Shape

Alberta’s getting ready to roll out its online gaming market, and it looks like it’ll be pretty similar to what’s happening in Ontario. The rules are becoming clearer, and things are moving forward.

While we’re still waiting on an exact launch date, the plan is for Alberta’s iGaming to be managed in a way that’s similar to Ontario. The province will oversee things, with one group acting as the main regulator.

What’s Different?

The province will continue to run its own existing online gaming platform. But soon, other licensed operators will be able to join the party, and they’re already starting to apply.

Getting In on the Action

If companies want to get involved in Alberta’s iGaming market, they’ll need to follow a two-step process:

1. Register with the province.
2. Sign an agreement.

There are fees involved, including an application fee and annual registration fees that vary depending on the type of business.

Revenue Sharing

The province will take a cut of the revenue, with a portion also going to First Nations and social responsibility initiatives. The government will get a percentage of what’s left.

Advertising Rules

Once operators are registered and have paid their fees, they can start advertising and signing up customers. However, there are rules about how they can promote their services.

Advertising must include responsible gambling messages and can’t target minors. Also, pro athletes can’t be used to promote gambling.

Any third parties working with licensed operators also need to make sure they aren’t working with any unlicensed gambling sites.

Protecting Players

Player protection is a big deal. Operators will need to:

• Be part of the province’s self-exclusion system.
• Offer tools to help players manage their gambling.
• Regularly update their responsible gambling materials.

Operators also need to prevent betting manipulation and report any suspicious activity.
